Systems Engineer

Position Summary: The System Engineer’s primary role is to provide computing support and maintenance for staff, as well as occasional server and network support.  This includes installing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading workstation and server hardware and equipment to ensure optimal performance. The Engineer will also troubleshoot problem areas in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end-user assistance where required.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: 

  • Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex desktop problems for end-users, and recommend and implement corrective solutions, including off-site repair for remote users as needed.
  • Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot end-user workstations and related hardware and software in order to deliver required desktop service levels.
  • Assess the need for and implement performance upgrades to computers, including the installation of CPUs, I/O and NIC cards, graphics cards, hard drives, memory chips, optical drives, and so on.
  • Receive and respond to incoming service tickets, calls, and/or e-mails regarding desktop problems, in a timely manner
  • Follow-up on assigned service tickets on a daily basis, ensuring that service tickets are completed accurately and timely.
  • Prepare tests and applications for monitoring desktop performance, and then provide performance statistics and reports.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of hardware and software.
  • Accurately document instances of desktop equipment or component failure, repair, installation, and removal.
  • If necessary, liaise with third-party support and PC equipment vendors.
  • Assist in developing long-term strategies and capacity planning for meeting future desktop hardware needs.
  • Write technical specifications for purchase of PCs, desktop hardware and related products.

Requirements

Qualifications: 

  • Certifications in Microsoft desktop operating systems and/or Microsoft Office.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer hardware, including Dell and HP desktops and servers. 
  • Experience with desktop and server operating systems, including Windows 10 and Windows Server 2008/2012/2016.
  • Extensive application support experience with the Microsoft Office Suite and Office 365.
  • Experience with installation, configuration, and operation of popular anti-virus and anti-malware software; experience cleaning infected computers.
  • Experience with Windows Active Directory, terminal server, print server, and file server environments.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, and follow-up skills.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Ability to absorb and retain information quickly.
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
  • Highly self-motivated and -directed.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional customer service orientation and experience.


Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a High school diploma with at least 3 years of relevant experience.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups.  

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

  • Microsoft Certified Professional  (preferred)
  • A+
